Memories

When my daughter was little, my sister Sandy made this darling wall hanging for her.  I'm so happy that I have saved it.  Now it's perfect for her daughter and it will bring back many memories.  I just love that braid.

Avigail's Binding

Avigail has learned to make a binding and sew it onto her quilt by machine.  Here she is finishing it by hand. It has a different look when it is done this way.

A Trip To IKEA

The answer to a question about IKEA.  No the food there is not Kosher.

Several of the ladies went to IKEA and had a great time.  We took 2 buses and 2 trains to get there.  I enjoyed the trains because I've never been on a train in Israel.  I felt like a little kid again.  Yes, we bought things, but not too much.  This first train is a double decker and very comfortable.

Here you can see that we bought only what we could carry.
Here is Sara giving us a hello.  Up top was a better view of the countryside.
The seats were great with a table in the middle.  Perfect for our morning brunch.

The Story Of Rina's Quilt

Rina started this quilt some time ago -- actually 2 identical quilts for her guest room.  Not having enough fabric led to her combining the two tops.  Well, now she realized that there is fabric left over that was not needed.  All of sudden there is fabric for another quilt top that wasn't planned.  It will look great in the same room even though it's not identical.  It's always amazing to me, how we start a project and it ends up differently.  Rina, they will both be terrific.  Problem solved.

I found this saying on "Bietjes Blog".  It says what I was thinking.

Susan's Hawaiian Block

Susan took a class to make a Hawaiian block sometime ago.  She wasn't happy with it, so she's trying again.  Susan is much happier with this second try.  It's lovely and will be a terrific pillow or wall hanging.

Scrappy Demo

A big thank you to Susan for teaching us a quick technique on making a Scrappy quilt.  You can find more on her blog called Scrap Happy.
Here are a few pictures that were taken as Susan was teaching us.  These are a few of the blocks that Susan has already put together.
Her pattern calls for 6 little squares down and 6 across.  Each square is 2 1/2". This will make one block.
First you cut 6 different strips from light to dark.  All with good contrast.  The strip is 2 1/2" wide and 16" long.  This is a great way to use up your ugly fabric, because everything looks great in this quilt.  Then just start sewing the strips together.
Next, iron well and rotate the seems when pressing.  Susan likes to use spray starch.  Then fold fabric in half and sew again making a tube.
Trim the edge to be sure it's straight then cut strips again at 2 1/2".
Now you have 6 new strips.  Take one at a time and undo the thread on each strip at a different seam and lay them out. as follows.

This sure is better than the old way of cutting up 2 1/2" blocks and sewing them together.  For further information and any questions, please drop in at Scrap Happy.

Sharing

The women in our group are so helpful.  Both Sara and Susan recently returned from the States.  Both brought in books and magazines for us to see.  We always want to see the latest ideas out there.  Thanks so much Susan and Sara for thinking of your quilting sisters.

Jacobs Ladder Block

My hubby has been asking for a quilt which seems like forever.  I hope this year will be the year he gets his own quilt.  This is the sample block and I will make this quilt according to his design.

Mini Quilt-a-thon

A big thank you to Renee S, Sara and Susan.  We needed to work on 3 comfort quilts and the ladies spent a great deal of time working on them.  This push was just what I needed to get these quilts moving.  The first and the only one that was completed so far was for our dear friend and fellow quilter, Renee B.  She is still very ill and needs your prayers.  This was the quilt we made for her hospital bed.  We were using a pattern called Between Friends, and this seemed to be an appropriate name for this quilt.  At the last minute we changed the arrangement and it looked more like a Rail Fence pattern.
This is a quilt for a 6 year old boy.  I hope he likes dolphins.  The border has been added and it's ready to be put together.
The cutting is finished for this jeans rag quilt.  It's for a 14 year old girl.  Hopefully it will be finished next week.  All the squares, batting and backs have been cut up.

Sara's New Project

Sara is starting a new quilt.  I don't know what the pattern will be.  She brought in the fabrics for us to see.  She may add a few more fabrics, like dark blue.  These are wonderful blue colors.  Can't wait to see what Sara is up to.

Hinda's Quilt

Hinda changed the binding on her latest quilt.  Instead of red, it's blue and it adds more to the quilt.  I'm told her grand kids love it.  Great job Hinda.

Sara's Music Quilt

Sara's music quilt is finished.  Susan did the machine quilting and it's outstanding.  We are all working on improving this skill.  It doesn't come easy to me, so it's practice, practice and more practice.

Broken Dishes Block

I finished another block for our Underground Railroad quilt, called Broken Dishes.  I'd really like to find out someday how this block got it's name.  It must be a funny story.  Years ago when I learned to quilt, I made a template, cut it out and put the block together by hand.  This took a long time. As so many of you know, we have new and faster ways to do this now.  There are even many tutorials that are shown on the internet.  I took some pictures of one faster way as I put this block together for the ladies in my group.

Bracha's Latest Projects

Bracha has completed three projects and they are fantastic little quilts.  The first is for Bubby and Zeidy for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.
This is for Bracha's grandson in Detroit.
And this is for her son-in-law Louis (Aryah).
